1 Day Commodities


A one-day course for the market professional who wishes to consolidate their knowledge in respect of Commodities and Commodity derivatives. The focus is on "necessary" knowledge for the underlying market along with exchanged traded and OTC products used for trading, hedging and arbitrage in commodity markets. The markets examined centre on energy and non-ferrous metals. 

Will learn: 

·        basic properties of energy and metals markets

·        the role of producers, consumers and exchanges

·        techniques of pricing and hedging commodity derivatives

·        techniques for commodity price risk management using derivatives including commodity swaps, forwards, futures and options

Audience: market professionals with at least 1-year experience (some understanding of markets/products helpful)

1)     Introduction to Commodities as traded assets : Oil and gas markets basics, metals markets basics.

2)     Producers and Consumers perspective: Hedging of products and consumption of a finite resource.

3)     Commodity price discovery: OTC and ETC markets, the “ring”, futures and physical, markets.

4)     Commodity derivatives: hedging using commodity swaps and option structures. Spreadsheet exercises.

5)     Commodity linked structures: securities (bonds) with pay-offs linked to commodity prices.

6)     Risk Assessment: understanding the risks in commodities and commodity derivatives.
